Heavy rainfall in Uttarakhand has once again highlighted the vulnerability of the region’s hilly terrain. On Monday morning, a massive landslide blocked the Badrinath National Highway near Bhanerpani in Chamoli district. Continuous downpour through the night triggered the landslide, causing large amounts of debris, mud, and boulders to fall onto the highway. As a result, hundreds of vehicles were stranded, and many pilgrims on their way to Badrinath had to halt their journey.
Rescue teams, including personnel from the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and local authorities, rushed to the spot. Efforts are ongoing to clear the debris and restore traffic, but persistent rain and falling rocks have slowed the operation. Meanwhile, officials have urged people to avoid traveling along the affected route until the situation improves. The incident has caused significant inconvenience to pilgrims and tourists, as the highway is a crucial part of the Char Dham Yatra route.
Authorities are also monitoring other vulnerable points along the highway, fearing more landslides if the rain continues. This incident once again underscores the need for better disaster preparedness and stronger infrastructure in the fragile Himalayan region to ensure the safety of residents and visitors during the monsoon season.
